Our next stop was at Mount Maunganui, near the industrial and large port of Tauranga. At the mouth of the port a large mount thrusts upwards and dominates the skyline. At the base of this lies the community of Mount Maunganui, a distinct contrast from neighbouring Tauranga as it is a surf town on the Bay Of Plenty. There are many miles of beaches around this huge bay which is famous for surfing and other water sports. We found a campground situated right on one of theses beaches and enjoyed walking on it and Paul was able to swim several times. We also took the easy hike around the base of the mount which gave us beautiful views of the bay.
