The Lions Eat

After a very interesting visit at a Massi Village we drove back to our camp.  Just as we were arriving our guide saw a stampede of Wildebeest and Zebras which

This is not unusual in itself because they are contantly on the move and running about. However, he saw a very quick flash of lion and made a quick u-turn and speed to follow the herd as he was sure the lions were hunting. Sure enough...in mere feet from the camp entrance a lioness had brought a 100 kg wildebeest down! We had the rare opportunity to see her kill the prey, which she does by suffocating the animal.

It did not take long for the male to arrive with two other females.

The hunting lioness was exhausted after she had finished, so much so that she had to rest.

One of the others dragged the meal into the shade and near the male.

The first order of business is to diembowel the animal as this is unpaletable to the lions. It ends up being waton by hyenas and carion birds but not while the lions are in the area! We watched as first the lioness and then the lion worked at this task.

They took 40 minutes to get this process started, even with their big powerful jaws. We left after the entire pride was forced to take a break and regain their strength.
