October 10-Cloveley

We spent a short time exploring the town of Ilfracombe where there was a fascinating and famous statue called Verity.

Then, we spent the rest of the day exploring the coast and headed to Clovelley, a fishing village built into the cliff face and above a shingle beach. It is accessible by a climb down a steep cobbled street. The residents get their supplies too and from their homes in sledges. In days of yore these were hauled by donkeys but no longer. Donkey's occasionally carry luggage to and from the hotels but not as a matter of course. The village is very picturesque and so unique. The buildings are quite and have stood for 500 years or longer. It felt like a step into the past.

One cottage was kept in it's original state and is a mini museum to the life style in the past.

We climbed both up and down the steep streets, although there was a car service down a back road.

We decided to continue on to Tintgel, the legendary castle of King Arthur. Sadly we drove an hour only to find that the cstle and grounds were closed for construction of a bridge. We could not even see the castle from a vantage point.

We therefore pressed on to our accommodations near Lyme Regis.
