A spectacular day awaited us. The weather was gorgeous if a but chilly and windy. We left the lake district and made our way to one of my 'bucket list' destinations-Hadrian's Wall. I have long been fascinated with thisRoman structure, constructed by the Emperor Hadrian to delineate and act as protection for the Northerly extremities of the Roman empire. The wall extends some 80 miles from one side of the island to the other and once stood 6 meters high.
We started with a visit to the Roman ArmyMuseum where we learned about details of the wall and the Romans and their lifestyle at the wall.
Then we followed up with a visit to the wall itself at the Cawfields quarry. We could see the wall as it stretched into the distance atop the rolling hills. We walked along the wall for a short distance and soaked up the atmosphere.
Then we visited another historic location, Vindolanda which predates the wall and was the site of 9 different Roman forts. These were constructed one on top of the other and the unique soil conditions have resulted on very well preserved artifacts, including fabrics and leathers and wooden tools.
Of particular interest are tablets which have been found with writing preserved on them. These are unique and are considered a historical treasure as they are numerous and five an insight into life at the time.
