September 20, Snowdonia National Park

The day started with rain and misty conditions, making it hard to enjoy the beach or to walk through the forests surrounding Barmouth. We decided to take a leisurely drive through Snodonia National park (the southerly portion) and, on my Dad's advice, to stop in Caernarfron. The weather did not improve as we drove down impossibly narrow roads through the park. We continue to be amazed by the fact that we are on a major route (an A class road) and it is sometimes too narrow for two cars to pass.

We stopped in a small village along the way and found that it was quaint and picturesque. Its name Beddgelert is Welsh for dog's grave, named because a Royal from the most odd antiquities had killed a dog mistakenly believing it had killed a child.  In fact, when the dust had cleared the owner discovered that the dog had in fact killed another animal which had been  trying to attack the very much alive and well child.

This village is nestled in the valley at the base of the famous Snowdon Mountain but this fact was not obvious as the clouds completely obscured the surrounding mountain range.

Despite the rain, we took short walk and saw the confluence of three rivers...

...and some very quaint and very old buildings. One of these was the cottage of the very Royal white slew his dog and is now a shop. We did a quick turn around this building and then were on our way.
